Camping Activities

Many people go camping but don’t really know what to do after they set up their tent and build a fire. So, I’ve compiled a small list of fun activities that you can do while in the backcountry. I will be adding more to this list.

Roast marshmallows or wienersThe best sticks for roasting are about 1 metre (3 ft) long, thin (a little thicker than a pen) and cleaned off at the end (burnt or cleared off with a knife)

Make s’moresRoast a marshmallow and while it’s still hot, place it and a square of chocolate between two graham crackers.Smores

Tell jokes/storiesWhat’s the difference between a hunter and a fisherman? A hunter lies in wait. A fisherman waits and lies.

Sing songsThis is the song that never ends. It goes on and on my friends…

Play an instrument

Play cardsCrazy Eights, Go Fish, 21, etc.

Take nature photos

Listen to the sounds of nature

Build Shelters – Lean-to, quinzhee (winter camping obviously), tarp shelters quinzhee

Watch/catch fireflies

Go fishingWait and lie!

Pick wild berriesBe sure to research which kinds of berries are safe to eat.

Bird watch

Skip rocksThe best rocks are thin, flat stones that are about the size of your palm.

Cook over the fireOr in the hot coals.

Go swimming 

Gunwale Bobbing – One person stands on on the gunwale at the bow and another stands on the gunwale at the stern. Now, bob up and down. The first to fall off, loses.
